After Samuel delivers a ‘message from heaven’ to Saul about wiping out Amalek in the south, King Saul leads a military campaign against the evil kingdom. Saul returns with his troops triumphantly and announces a big special event to celebrate the victory. Samuel arrives to confront Saul; the king has blatantly ignored the most important part of heaven’s instruction.
Saul knows what he has done and left undone, but doesn’t want to acknowledge his mistakes let alone his resentment toward Samuel and God’s message. The 2 men clash badly and fall out for good. It is the beginning of the end of Saul’s kingship (and life).
